Pursuit ends with burning car

A Corinth man faces multiple felony charges after his vehicle crashed and burst into flames while fleeing from police.

Corinth Police Chief Ralph Dance said Demerious Mayes, 21, of 506 Cemetery Street, Corinth, has been charged with felony fleeing, felony possession of marijuana and felony possession of a stolen handgun. He is being held on a $55,000 bond.

The pursuit began when CPD Capt. Fred Serio witnessed Mayes' vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Young Street late Wednesday evening. Dance said Serio turned on his blue lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop and Mayes sped away.

The pursuit traveled through town before Mayes lost control and went through a yard near Sixth Street and Buchanan Street. He then regained control before losing it again and striking a mailbox and a tree.

When the vehicle stopped it burst into flames and was filled with smoke. Mayes jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to run before being captured by Serio. He was found to be in possession of a felony amount of marijuana and a handgun that proved to be stolen.
