Man in burned vehicle identified

DNA testing has confirmed the identity of a Rienzi man who died as the result of an auto accident that led to the vehicle catching fire on May 7.

Coroner Jay Jones identified the man as Sammy Tyra, 69, of 227 County Road 550, Rienzi. He is apparently from Prentiss County originally.

Jones received the man's identity from the state crime lab Wednesday morning. He said the man's injuries were consistent with the apparent vehicle accident, in which the car appeared to have run off the road.

At 3:35 p.m. on May 7, a bus driver spotted the burning vehicle and reported it to 911. Southwest and Pisgah fire departments responded to the scene on County Road 550 near County Road 518 in southwest Alcorn County.

Tyra was last seen by family about 3:15 p.m., and it is believed he was on his way to Tupelo.

Funeral services for Tyra will be with Kesler Funeral Home of Baldwyn.
