Grass fire burns near railroad causesissues

Several county fire departments had a busy afternoon Wednesday containing a grass fire that extended along the railroad in the Strickland and Glen area east of Corinth.

The Mississippi Forestry Commission also responded to the fire, which began around 11:50 a.m. and continued well into the afternoon. About 3:30 p.m., County Fire Coordinator Ricky Gibens said forestry was still working on some hot spots and plowing firebreaks.

œIt got close to a couple of structures, one on 306 and one on 300, but no structures were damaged, he said.

It appeared the fire burned a few cross ties on the Redmont Railroad. The fire was also near the race track in the Strickland area.

The cause of the blaze is unknown.

Glen, Farmington, Biggersville and Jacinto had firefighters at the scene, said Gibens.

Despite the large amount of rain during the winter months, the top of the ground is currently dry, he said.
