Mississippi Public Broadcasting will encourage residents across
the state to experience Corinth and Shiloh history with both television
and radio broadcasts scheduled on Wednesday.
Exploring History: Corinth, Mississippi and Shiloh National
Military Park will air on MPB television stations at 7 p.m.
Wednesday. A related news feature, First Impressions, Lasting
Memories, will air on MPB Think Radio at 6:35 a.m. and 7:35
a.m.
The 30-minute Exploring History documentary tells the
story of the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center, Corinth Contraband
Camp and Shiloh Battlefield, while the radio segment is a four-minute
piece which will air during Morning Edition.
Both broadcasts detail the history of Corinth and Shiloh and also
follow the experiences of 40 members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of
Jackson Madison County, Tenn., and North Mississippi during a summer
visit that was sponsored by the tourism office, Shiloh National Military
Park, MPB and the shows producer, WLJT-TV of Martin, Tenn.
The kids didnt know for sure at the beginning of the tour
if they were going to have fun, said MPB reporter Ron Brown.
They certainly didnt know they were going to learn, but
by the end of the day there were smiles all around.
The program was conceived to coincide with Ken Burns The
National Parks: Americas Best Idea.
Working on this documentary has allowed me to re-experience
the abundant history of the area in a whole new way, much like the
kids of the Boys and Girls Clubs experienced it, said Darrell
Conner, one of the executive producers.
Tourism Director Kristy White is excited about the attention the broadcasts
will focus on the area.
A lot of people dont think about Corinth having a national
park, she said. We wanted to help increase the exposure
of our interpretive center. The program also shows the museum and
gives a look at Corinth as a whole.
Although some TV listings indicate a different program at 7 p.m. Wednesday
on the Booneville MPB station, MPB Outreach Director Kathy Broom said
the program will air statewide on MPB stations in that time slot.
Viewers can share memories, photo and videos of Shiloh and other national
parks at www.mpbonline.org.
The stories will become part of the archive of the National Park Foundation.
