Approval of several community funding requests were the main items
of business conducted by the Corinth Area Convention and Visitors
Bureau Board of Directors meeting last week.
The two largest amounts the board approved funds for was $5,000 for
the Verandah-Curlee House and $3,000 for the Hog Wild Festival.
The money for the Veranda-Curlee House was requested by Rosemary Williams
on behalf of the Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission. The funds,
according to the funding request, are to be used to match a Mississippi
Certified Local Grant.
The grant money which totals $10,152 is intended to
be used for planning restoration work at the historic home. The CLG
grant, according to the application, is a federal grant distributed
through the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The CACVB
board approved $5,000 of the matching funds.
The board also approved the $3,000 requested by Main Street Director
Kelly Rinehart on behalf of Main Street Corinth for the Hog Wild Barbecue
Festival. The festival is held annually on the first weekend of October.
The established event has the potential for economic return for Corinth,
according to Rinehart.
The board approved $1,500 toward a request by Greg Cooley on behalf
of the Corinth Rotary Club for the Austin Shoes Run with Rotary
5K run event. The funding application requested $5,000, however several
board members expressed a desire to exercise some funding restraint
due to the fact that the run which will take place the same
weekend as Hog Wild is an inaugural event.
The board approved a request for $520 made by managing director, Tommy
Ledbetter, on behalf of Corinth-Theatre-Arts for theatre sign boards.
A $26,000 funding request by director Todd Witt, on behalf of the
Corinth/Alcorn County Parks and Recreation, was tabled by the board
until further notice. The request was made for the installation of
new fencing for the pavilion playground area.
The board tabled the issue of officer elections pending the outcome
of board appointments.
After a general report of other upcoming events and other minor items
of business the board adjourned after setting the next meeting date
for Sept. 15.
