Serious health problems have led to the resignation of veteran Alcorn County educator Wilson Busby from the Alcorn Board of Education. Board members formally accepted Busby's resignation during a special called meeting Tuesday afternoon. In his letter of resignation Busby, who was not present at Tuesday's meeting, said health problems prevented him from fully performing the duties of his office.
Busby has held the third district seat on the board since 2004 when he was appointed to replace the late Bettie Ketcham. He won a special election later that year to serve the two years remaining on Ketcham's term and was elected to his first full term on the board in the 2006 general election.
Busby's resignation marks the end of a decades long career in education which includes 21 years as Biggersville High School principal, a post he left in 1993. Board President Jan Haley said she learned a great deal from Busby duringhis tenure on the board.
"He was anawesome person to work with," said Haley. She said Busby always kept his focus on improving opportunities for students. "His number one priority in every decision he made was the children. It was a joy to work with Wilson," said Haley.
Superintendent Stacy Suggs said Busby's years of experience and calm demeanor will be missed. "Wilson was a well respected educator in the county. He always brought a sense of wisdom to all situations. I consider him a friend and the Alcorn School District will miss him greatly," he said.
Board members now have up to 60 days to appoint someone to fill the vacant seat. According to the Mississippi code, the board must appoint someone residing in the district. A special election will be held for the seat in conjunction with the regular November general election. The winner of the special election will take office in January 2009.
In other business during Tuesday's meeting, board members voted to decline reimbursement for themselves for local travel.
The board then adjourned for a lengthy closed session to discuss personnel matters regarding the district's 2008-2008 school year staff.
The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on April 22, a change from the regular date due to scheduling conflicts.
