The Corinth Area
Convention and Visitors Bureau will be talking tourism as they prepare
to launch a new radio show aimed at bringing visitors to the area.
The CACVB Board
voted Tuesday to approve the purchase of radio time for a monthly
program on WXRZ 94.3 FM to be called "Let's Talk Tourism".
CACVB Executive Director Kristy White said the program will air live
on the third Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. beginning
in September.
White said the
goal of the program will be to promote tourism in the area by informing
those in the surrounding region of upcoming special events including
festivals and community and civic club events that can draw more visitors
to Corinth and Alcorn County.
"This will
be another way to get this out in the community," she said.
Board members
also heard Tuesday from Crossroads Regional Park Director Todd Witt
who presented a newly revised master plan for the expansion of the
park. Witt said he's asking the board for their support for the
long-term plan that would add new softball and baseball fields for
youth and adults, along with additional tennis courts, new racquetball
courts, and numerous other new facilities on the existing park property
and land adjacent to the park along Droke Road that currently belongs
to the park but has not been developed.
Witt estimates
the total cost of the project at around $11 million and said he knows
it is a dream that will not come true tomorrow, but he believes the
expansion would pay dividends by allowing the park to bring in a variety
of athletic tournaments that could draw thousands of people a year
to Corinth, providing a big boost to the local economy.
The park director
told the board he doesn't know exactly how the project would
be funded and he is meeting with city and county officials to look
at possibilities and get guidance and support.
"This is
something the community is going to have to get behind if this is
ever going to happen," he said.
Tourism Board
Chairman John Ross said the board supports the idea of the expansion
and believes it would greatly benefit tourism efforts in the community.
He said the board is committed to working with the park in any way
possible to further sports-related tourism in the county.
In other business,
the board:
- approved
a grant of $1,000 for the Farmington Heritage Festival, set for Sept.
20 21. The festival will include a reenactment of the Battle of Farmington,
along with numerous other activities.
- approved
a $3,000 sponsorship for this year's Hog Wild Barbecue Festival.
- noted work
is being completed on a coupon book for visitors featuring discounts
from local hotels, retail businesses, restaurants, attractions and
others.
- voted to
purchase a memorial brick on the Corinth Theatre-Arts Walk of Fame
at a cost of $125 in memory of the late Emy Wilkinson, former director
of what was then known as the Corinth Area Tourism Promotion Council.
